Overview of the report
The primary goal of Green Light Southampton (GLS) Ltd is to increase the employability of young people who are not in employment, education or training (NEETS) or are on the edge of becoming part of them. The GLS group also focuses on those how has been excluded out of schools with mental, health or other learning difficulties. GLS also plans to enable them in acquiring the essential qualifications and attributes necessary for them to experience real working environment, thereby increasing their employability. GLS is employing the seven-point framework of competencies of self-management, team work, business and customer awareness, problem solving, communication and literacy, application of numeracy and information technology. The purpose of this report is to understand client objectives and designing a diagnostic and analytical research program for the client to properly understand the problem and successfully rectifying them.
Green Light Southampton (GLS) Ltd is a social enterprise based in Southampton, owned by Maddy Law and Chris Dobson. GLS provides business and services with social service as the primary objective, and any surpluses received are not utilised to maximize profit for the owners but are reinvested in the community for the same fundamental objective. Green Light Southampton organizes workshops for schools and community groups in order to provide training in carpentry and life-forms to the long-term unemployed and probationary individuals, in addition to those who are vulnerable to join the group. GLS operates in many industries but this project of the group focuses on carpentry and skill aspects only. Carpentry as a profession dates back to ancient history when mankind in its early days used basic tools. Construction industry of UK is in the phase of rapid development and is looking forward to create an environment in the most dynamically changing and challenging way. GLS identifies carpentry as a large and important part of the UK construction industry, and that which will derive benefits from this period of strong growth as commercial construction and infrastructure emerges to the forefront. GLS aims at raising the employability of NEETS and vulnerable groups, by providing them with safe and secure work environment. The prominent goal of GLS is to provide attributes, skill and knowledge that lead to employability by accrediting courses in wood work and life skills, thereby providing a safe and supportive environment. GLS also intends to focus on helping long-termed unemployed individuals in gaining qualifications necessary for earning them a job.
The main problem currently in front of GLS is recognition. GLS wants to be better known in order to reach out to a larger community and increase their revenue which will, in future, be invested back into the community. Other short-term and long-term problems in front of the goals outlined by GLS are those regarding funding. GLS is looking for companies that are interested in financing social enterprises. This will help them attain wide sponsorship levels, thereby increasing the financial feasibility of the organisation. Aim and Objectives
The primary of this project is substantive, i.e. how Green Light can increase its revenue. To achieve this primary aim, it is important to consider other sub-aims and quantitative the objectives. This can be successfully achieved by creating awareness of the GLS brand through advertising on social networking websites such as Facebook, Twitter and Youtube, and during events or meetings in universities, exhibitions and schools, In order to be better known, GLS must be assisted in acquiring a wide range of sponsorship from companies that are even remotely interested in sponsoring this kind of social enterprise. The objectives specified to achieve these set of goals focus mainly on acquiring corporate sponsorship through corporate agents, and achieving a competitive edge by modifying and renewing organizations business strategy. The analysis of present competition will be done and the resulting feedback and observations will be appropriately utilized in driving the organization forward. Structure of the report
The report is structured within five chapter divided into different areas of assessment and analysis. Chapter 2 – Methodology
This chapter highlights the methodology which has been used while collecting various facts and figures associated with the project. Quantitative and qualitative data and statistics are provided which had been obtained through various observations, interviews with partners at GLS and various organization documents made available by the organization itself. An overview is also provided describing the various methods by which Green Light Southampton is aiming at creating awareness and creating an image of the enterprise not only in the targeted community but among the targeted potential sponsors as well.
Green Light Southampton Ltd is a social enterprise with Maddy Law and Chris Dobson as the directors. Maddy Law has had 15 years’ experience in teaching field and has experience as a recruitment head for financial recruitment company called Spicer UK. Chris Dobson, on the other hand has had over 35 years of training experience, with training in counseling and carving practices obtained through famous professional tutors. The plan was realized following a 2009 event hosted by City Limits for those reaching the age of joining adult environment, where it was discussed that owing to the existence of un-employability among the youth, there is an extreme need of providing those unemployed and vulnerable individuals with the opportunity of working in a safe and secure environment which will ensure necessary learning of life-skills necessary for enabling them with improved employability and an independent position in society.
Green Light PR aspects:
In the Monday morning module, Green Light Southampton will ask the job centre to send some applicant, as all the job centres have to insure that the unemployed applicant get involved in some courses until they find them the job the suits them. Subsequently, Green Light Southampton invites those applicants for this club every Monday from 9:30 till 12:30 and each one of them has to pay £1 as fee. GLS also intends to hire new workers and increase the advertising level of the organization image, as a result of which GLS expects an increase in demand of their products, services and the corresponding programs. Acquiring a long-term funding stream will help GLS achieve a self-esteem level greater than before, and consequently, GLS feels that as a result, its responsibility towards the community and the sponsoring partners will increase tremendously, for which GLS aims at improving itself further and has set out a five year plan and appropriate balance and forecast sheets.
Chapter – 3 Findings
The chapter highlights the effort that has been done in identifying the major problems associated with the project. These problems are then subdivided into smaller aims and objectives, and an effort has also been done to establish the link between the problems faced and the aims and objectives of the project. The main focus is on providing the information which establishes the role of Green Light Southampton as an enterprise working towards the identified problems of the community. Various surveys and poll results are provided to highlight the effectiveness of the different endeavors that Green Light Southampton is aiming to provide its potential clients, thereby creating a need for such a social enterprise as Green Light.
It has been identified by the UK government that the proportion of unemployed youth – between ages 16-24 – has risen to 15.6% (highest in a final quarter since 2005) and the number is expected to grow continuously. According to figures released by Department of Education in UK, about 18% of the youth between ages 18-24 are unemployed, a number which is apparently following a growing trend. With the youth unemployment peak hitting all-time highs, the situation poses an issue that needs to be immediately addressed. There is an extreme need of investment in education owing to the recent economic recession which left many graduates struggling to find employment opportunities or had to take up jobs way below their educational background and working capabilities. To the NEET and those on the very edge of becoming a part of it, it is essential to provide them with a safe and secure environment to learn the employability skills which are recognized as necessary in building self-esteem, literacy and communications levels. Along with enterprises such as Green Light Southampton, that provides programs and services to provide such an environment to the youth; there are major hurdles which restrain them from reaching out to a larger community. The absence of sufficient financial and marketing capabilities of such enterprises is a problem that also has to be realized by investor companies who need to endeavor towards supporting the community aspects of such business.
Statistics:The data for these statistics was taken from clients attending Wooden Tiger through either placements or part of the Preparation for Employment in Construction Industries (QCF) Level-1 course via Crescent Training Ltd. They also include clients from Solent EBP and City Limits. The clients were asked to complete an analysis form.

Figure 1 and 2 above indicate that a big portion of the clients taking part in the poll was a part of the NEETS group and was single and living with their parents. While a significant portion of them were lone parents whose kids were living abroad or hadn’t contacted them for years and the rest were in the process of learning but were hindered by mental health issues. While none of the clients surveyed were married, the percentage of those that were married earlier but divorced was also small. These statistics suggest that there is much to be done towards helping the unemployed in attaining essential qualifications for employment, while providing them a safe and secure environment to learn and work in. It becomes clear that the client base comprising those that have relatively less employment opportunities and a low quality of life is big, and there is a definite need for social enterprises such as GLS to provide such individuals, mainly young people, the necessary environment to creatively learn life skills, thereby preventing them from becoming the part of the NEET group.
Figure 3 suggests that a high percentage of the clients surveyed were suffering from low self-esteem levels before attending the programs offered by Wooden Tiger, and also, those having average level of confidence were rather low. However, self-esteem levels of the clients after they had undergone basic skills courses provided by Wooden Tiger are unexpectedly higher. While 71.4% of the clients had achieved high levels of self-esteem, a significant portion settled at average (21.42%) and a very small amount (7.18%) had benefited the least from Wooden Tiger programs.
The statistics in figure 4 indicate that only a small portion of the clients surveyed had above-average literacy levels, while the majority had average or poor literacy levels before attending Wooden Tiger. Percentage data in the second portion of the figure shows that by attending Wooden Tiger’s basic skills courses in different industries, a high percentage of the clients (92.92%) had managed to increase their literacy level. A small portion (7.18%) had almost similar literacy levels even after attending Wooden Tiger programs and gained no benefit whatsoever, while none of the clients taking part in the Wooden Tiger courses had reported any decrease in literacy levels, implicating the success of the Wooden Tiger program towards increasing the literacy levels of the low self-esteemed individuals.
Statistics from figure 5 show that numeracy levels of the clients before attending Wooden Tiger were extremely poor. While 64.26% had poor numeracy levels, 35.74% had average numeracy skills and none of them was at the above-average level. Numeracy levels of the same clients after attending Wooden Tiger programs dramatically increased, and this increase was observed by every client, as indicated by the 100% figure in the chart.
GLS aims at increasing the employability of individuals, mainly young people, by helping them attain attributes necessary for employment opportunities. GLS plans to achieve this by increasing the literacy, communication and numeracy levels of the unemployed or those on the verge of becoming part of the NEET group. The statistics clearly suggest that there is a large portion of the society that comes under the NEET and unemployed group and are either single or divorced. While majority of the clients had low self-esteem, literacy and numeracy levels before attending Wooden Tiger; a major portion among them had achieved increased levels of literacy and numeracy, along with high self-esteem. As is evident from figure 6, a very large portion of them managed to attain increased change in employability (85.68%), and now had better attributes and skills to earn them a job and help them become more independent. The programs offered by GLS aim at helping the clients in learning self-management and increasing their business awareness. After attending such programs, there are definite chances of them attaining increased of business communication, literacy, numeracy and IT skills. Furthermore, being a part of such creative and secure environment will help them develop reliability, team work and problem solving skills.
The importance of a social enterprise such as Green Light Southampton can be realized from the fact that while 65% of the NEET group expects to find employment in the near future, the 35% left have no employment expectations. It is of great service to the community to enable this unmotivated group of UK society with the providence of increased level of basic skills necessary to earn them employment opportunities. Surveys conducted by Green Light Southampton have reported that almost every employee believes that good communication, numeracy and literacy skills are vital in every industrial and service sector. It has been identified that such an effort of incorporating team work and an environment with employability experience needs to be implemented right from the start of school education of young people. Within any work environment that the young people are subjected to, it is important to integrate the concept of employability and learning. Various studies and surveys suggest that there are certain qualities as expected by an employer to be present in an employee. To secure employability, an employee should possess the inclination towards leaning and team work, and should be reliable regarding management and communication aspects. For this purpose, a model has been designed which addresses the key aspects of employability. The main emphasis is on young individuals to experience an environment of team work and self-management, which is expected to ensure an increase in their respective problem solving, literacy and communication skill.
GLS aims at increasing employability of the clients through various courses and placement programs, and other community and social events that helps GLS reach out to a larger community. There are various placement opportunities and courses offered by GLS for the clients from CDG and various other sources to choose from. These courses are aimed at increasing the employability of the clients and enabling them with learning various attributes essential for qualifications regarding employment opportunities, thereby providing them with a safe and secure work environment.
