Overview of the subject

This subject is embedded in a business context and uses:

  • descriptive methods to graphically and numerically summarise data sets;
  • inferential techniques on sample data to determine characteristics of the parent populations;
  • regression techniques to predict future outcomes.

The subject provides an introduction to basic statistical concepts and techniques and a working knowledge of a number of inferential procedures to solve statistical problems in a business context. The subject  covers the use of techniques such as hypothesis tests and to develop evidence based predictions that can be used when making business decisions.

Assessment1

Purpose:                     

This assessment is designed to allow students to demonstrate their ability to present, summarise and manipulate sample data, make basic statistical inferences, interpret the results in a business context using statistical software packages and techniques, and identify problems and solutions. This assessment relates to Learning Outcome a, b, c and d
Topic: Preceding weekly / fortnightly subject content
Task Details:
Details will be provided throughout the trimester

Assessment 2

Purpose:                     

To revise and reinforce subject content taught up to and including week 5. This assessment contributes to Learning Outcome a, b and c
Topic:Subject content up to and including weeks 1 – 5
Task Details:
Closed book exam. A list of formulae and statistical tables will be provided. Students should bring a 10 digit non-programmable calculator to the exam. No other supporting aids or materials will be permitted.

Assessment 3

Purpose:

To allow students to demonstrate an understanding of statistical analysis and the ability summarise and manipulate sample data, make basic statistical inferences and interpret the results in a business context. This assessment contributes to Learning Outcome a, b, c and d.
Topic: What do the figures mean
Task Details:             
Students will be presented with a set of numerical data, and a business scenario. From this you will need to present, summarise and manipulate sample data, make basic statistical inferences and interpret the results.

Assessment 4

Purpose:

The purpose of the final examination is to test your understanding of course concepts business and your ability to apply these concepts. The examination may cover materials used in tutorials, class discussions and/or from the readings This assessment relates to Learning Outcomes a, b, c and d
Topic: The examination may cover content from any part of the entire subject.
Task Details:                        
Students will be given various business scenarios with relevant data sets. From these students will be expected to apply relevant statistical data analysis, and interpret the findings for the given situations.
