The requirement of the personal development which supports the organizational objectives to be achieved is:

The first and foremost skill that I have to work upon is the technical expertise; this is the technological era and without being technically sound it is not possible to be successful in the profession.

Professional skills and strategic thinking are yet other areas of development for me for achieving the organizational objectives. I also need to develop the skills of setting the goals and targets as these are one of the most important skills.

For achieving the organizational objectives it is necessary to delegate the work and responsibility and for this reason I also need to develop the delegation skills and last but not the least the mentoring skills are also I need to work upon.

Assess opportunities for development of leadership and management skills.

Coaching: It is one of the famous techniques for developing the leadership and management skills and opportunities.

Mentoring: Through mentoring the individuals get to develop the skills to lead others and show them the guidance in times of need. This is how the leadership and management skills are developed.

Formal Training: There are numbers of formal training programs available which are aimed at developing the leadership and management skills. (Miller, 2012)

Various other approaches for developing leadership and management skills are:

Surface Learning: The surface learning is an approach where the learners just want to mug up the approaches without actually creating any deep interest in them. In such approaches the learning is not that much effective. (Weimer, 2012)

Deep Learning Approach: The deep learning approach is that approach where the learner actually develops an interest in the topic he has to learn or the technique he wants to acquire. The out of the box thinking is the approach that takes place in the deep learning approach. (Lublin, 2003)

ACT Technique of Learning: The ACT in ACT technique of learning stands for acceptance and commitment therapy. According to this technique the best way to learn something is to accept that is in the personal control of a learner and being committed to those actions which can improve that learning so that the life can be enriched. (ACT Mindfully, 2015)

Double Loop Learning: The double loop learning is also a famous organizational learning technique. Through the double loop learning the goals of the learners are evaluated and re-evaluated. This technique is the sophisticated technique of learning as it involves more engagement with the experience rather than ignoring it.

Manage personal development of leadership and management skills.

Through the following ways the leadership and management skills can be developed:

Continuous Review: The one of the major requirements of managing the leadership and management skills is to have a continuous review of self-performance. If the performance is not being reviewed then it will soon become outdated and obsolete eventually. The key is thus to review it continuously to keep up with the trend.

Learn From Experience: It is said that ‘to err is human’, thus it is not possible not to make any mistake in the whole career.  (National Academic Press, 2000) The problem does not lie in making mistakes it lays in not learning from them.

Using Feedback: The feedback is also very necessary to know that what those areas are where the individual needs to work upon.  The essence of managing the leadership and management skills lays in having the genuine feedback in order to make better improvements.

Recording Achievements: The achievements must also be recorded. The reason behind this recording is that the practices which have been success in the past can be repeated in future also. The recording also helps the individual to keep up the track of the areas where there were flaws and mistakes so that these mistakes are not repeated again.

Sharing with Others: The management of the managing and leadership skills is also important for the reason of being successful in this competitive era. Sharing the experiences and learning with others enhance the richness of the experience and also helps the learner to have the broader view on the areas of development.(Read more about Management Control systems assignment)

Review personal development plan against original objectives.

The objectives that I had set for myself are:

  • Organize the time in better way
  • Improving strategic thinking
  • Decision making
  • Environment Awareness
  • Leading Skills
  • Communication Skills
  • Team Working Skills
  • Gain knowledge about Various Leadership Styles
  • Mentoring Skills

Out of the above objectives I succeeded in achieving many objectives. Few objectives are achieved partially. The reviews of the original objectives against original objectives are:

Time Management: After making the to-do-list I started to manage the time quite effectively. Though in initial stages I faced difficulty in sticking to the ‘to-do-list’ but once I learned to stick to that list all the problems solved and I succeeded in managing the time.

Strategic Thinking: The strategic thinking development was quite a difficult task to do and needed lots of efforts. My aim was to develop the strategic thinking by solving minimum of 150 case studies by the end of 2 and a half month but I managed to solve 127 case studies in that span of time. However the strategic thinking skills were improved up to a great extent.

Decision Making: The skills of decision making were also quite difficult to acquire. The targets were set to solve the case studies and read the books. Though this method improved my decision making skills, however in originality I found out that the best way to improve the decision making skills is to actually take the decisions in real life situations. Thus this objective was achieved partially.

Environmental Awareness: The study of the environment by different kind of books and range of material made me quite aware of the environment and also helped me understand the realities of the market.

Leading Skills: The leading skills were also improved quite dramatically as leading the spring team gave me the practical implementation of my leading skills which made me improve the leading skills but as leadership is quite a difficult exercise to learn thus there is still a long way to go.

Communication Skills: The communication skills were also improved by lectures and the program and they are now quite effective.

Team Working Skills: The team working skills were also improved because I practiced them by practical implementation (actively participating in the team).

Mentoring Skills: The mentoring skills were also very difficult to be improved and though I practiced them by actually doing it but still it needs more of the practice and thus they are also achieved partially.

Evaluate the effectiveness of personal development of leadership and management skills.

To evaluate that how much effective the skills of personal development and leadership are it is necessary that they must be able to be measured. The outcomes of my personal development of leadership and management skills are:

The first advantage that I got by personal development of leadership and management skills is that I got to manage my time quite effectively. The difficulty was being faced in the initial stages but now the time management has become quite easy for me.

The strategic thinking skills are also quite critical for effective personal development and leadership skills. Through solving the case studies those were also improved and this is the reason that numbers of case studies (127 to be exact) were solved in the duration of two and a half month.

The success of any professional depends upon the decisions taken. The actions that I took for improving my decision making skills were to solve the case studies and there was a degree of improvement in my decision making skills now.

The study of environment and the knowledge about the market is also necessary for the success of profession and by reading a range of material I became quite aware of the environment.

I also lead a team and this is the reason that the team leading skills were improved and I feel quite confident now when it comes to lead a team.

In this era the communication and soft skills are of great importance and thus my aim was to achieve excellence in the communication skills. I got to improve my communication skills by the program and the various videos watched by me.

Working in a team requires lots of patience and an ability to go along with people. As I worked in a team thus my team working skills improved dramatically.

When it comes to leadership and management skills mentoring is an essential part of it. Thus the mentoring skills were also aimed to be improved in personal development plan. Through mentoring the college team I got to improve my mentoring skills a bit. (Chartered Management Institute, 2013)

Those activities which were not as effective as I expected are:

Solving only the case studies to improve the strategic thinking skills; this must be more of a practical exercise.

Leading the team was also not 100% effective and need more practical exposure.

Mentoring also need to be practised more precisely as it is a difficult exercise to perform.

Analyse areas for further development and update personal development plan.

The areas which need to be developed further and those areas which are added in the personal development plan are highlighted as grey

 Conclusion

The assignment gave me the practical implementation of how to develop the leadership and management skills. After completing the assignment I came to learn about making the personal development plan and how to review the performance of self as well as self-development. The review of the learning is very essential for effective development and the assignment gave me a better understanding of all this.
